History
Originally opened in 1993 by the Mayor of Mitcham, Lyndon Parnell, as a direct result of a parish consultation. A competition was run to find a name for the centre and the name chosen relates to both the picket fence in front of the church and the association of friendly neighbours chatting over the fence.
Two shops adjacent to the church on South Road were rented and the centre was manned by volunteers from the church under the direction of Co-ordinator Ian Lamb.
From its small beginnings, the Picket Fence quickly outgrew the space available, and in 1995 it was relocated to its present position in the grounds of the parish.
Services provided have always included tea, coffee and lunches, a friendly place to chat and meet people and Emergency Relief Assistance.
All this has been due to the support of many generous volunteers.
St Mary’s Picket Fence has always offered companionship, a safe an friendly environment, and activities such as 8 ball, card games, craft, board games and more.
